Etymology: Acc. to Specht KZ 66, 203f. as δαρ-δ-αίνω, -άνω to a word for `excrement', seen in OE tord n. `excrement', ONo. torðyfill `dung-beetle', as in Latv. dìrst `cacare', Lith. dìrsė `back'. He starts from IE *der- `fleece, separate' (s. δέρω). In fact we know nothing.
